Now that summer is officially underway it’s time for some road trips! Gas prices might be up and it’s warmer than ever, but a road trip can still be a great way to spend the weekend. When you start thinking about where you want to go you need to consider what you might need to get you there. A little bit of prevention can go a long way toward saving you a lot of trouble later.

Along with packing your shoes, clothes and electronics for the trip there are a few safety issues that need to be dealt with when taking a trip. First you need to make sure your vehicle is in good working order. Check the tires – replace, rotate and air them up as needed. A worn tire can be a big hazard going down the highway and more expensive to replace when on the interstate.

The oil and coolants are also something that you need to take a look at. Change, fill, or at least check the oil and other fluids before you take off to help you reduce the chance of overheating which could damage to the engine. Once again taking the time to do this can save you a ton of time and money while on the road.

When all the checks have been completed on the vehicle begin to think about your emergency kit. Have drinking water, emergency snacks such as jerky or energy bars, road flares, a fire extinguisher, safety cones, a flashlight, extra batteries (several kinds), your cell phone charger and such in a bag so you can keep them in the trunk or back of the vehicle. A change of clothes and extra money is also a great thing to have in case of an emergency on the road. It can also be quite helpful if at least one member of your family has been trained in first aid and CPR.

This next step is where your insurance agent can help you – make sure you have the right amount of coverage for you and your family before hitting the road. If something does go wrong such as a car wreck or other damage to your vehicle you won’t be left high and dry to pay for everything yourself plus in most states it is the law. If you will be taking the family RV out instead of your everyday vehicle you should keep in mind that a different type of insurance will be required. Also, never assume that you don’t need coverage if you are just going out for a day or two.

Following these steps can take some time but it is well worth it in the long run when you are out there on the road possibly far from home. Remember have fun, be safe and never drive distracted by texting or while under the influence.
