No matter how you break it down, there are many parts of insurance coverage that can read just as easily as ancient Greek.  Unfortunately, there are many sources that promise to take the mysticism out of purchasing insurance policies. Car insurance policies are no exception. The amount of misinformation that is available can be simply outstanding. Let’s try to take away some of those misconceptions though so you can better understand what really goes into deciding your auto insurance rates.

Not at Fault

If the police determine that you weren’t at fault for that accident you won’t have to worry about paying the deductible, right? Wrong. Just because the police have decided you are not at fault you will still have to work with your insurance company. They are the ones that make the final determination that will help to decide whether or not you have to cover the deductible. If they finish their investigation and decide you are truly not at fault you will be in the clear. On the other hand, if they find that you were actually the one at fault you will definitely have to pay.

Lead Foot Problems

While speeding can have a detrimental effect on your driving record it is not necessarily cause for alarm as far as your insurance rates are concerned. That is as long as it doesn’t involve reckless endangerment. One incident of going a couple miles over will not have a negative impact, but if you are stopped for going several miles over or are stopped for repeated offenses, then you can be sure that your auto insurance rates will see an increase.

My Car’s Color is More Expensive

This is absolutely false. A car’s color can make repairs more expensive due to the cost of paint, but you will not be paying higher premiums for one color vehicle versus another. While the make and model of your vehicle can play a part in the cost of your policy color most assuredly does not.

Might as Well Choose the Cheap Route

Think that insuring that 1979 beater is going to be cheaper than insuring a brand new 2013 model? Think again. The cost of your policy is going to be based on the original price of the car, how often that model is stolen, any history on the vehicle in question, repair costs, and more. It is very possible to have a cheap old vehicle that actually costs more to insure than a brand new one.

While these are not the only auto insurance myths out there they do represent the level of misinformation that is available to all that will believe.
