Summer is once again around the corner and you are ready to hit the road, so it is once again time to go through the check list. There is more than what you are going to pack to consider. Here is our list and our tips on what to focus on before going on a summer road trip.

The first thing to consider is whether or not your car is ready to hit the road. These things need to be checked:

  • Are the tires aired properly and have a good amount of tread remaining?
  • Do you need your oil changed?
  • Are your antifreeze/engine coolant levels where they need to be?
  • Are my turn signals, head lights and tail lights working properly? Make sure to check high, low and fog beams.
  • Are the breaks in good working order?
  • Is the air conditioner coolant in your cars system filled properly?
  • Are the airbag sensors working properly?
  • Do you have good windshield wipers and filler cleaning fluids?

All of these things can be checked at your local mechanic shops or car dealership.

The next factor is other safety factors in case of a breakdown or other emergency on the road:

  • Do I have fully stocked first aid kit including bandages, emergency allergy meds, pain and fever reducers and a tunicate?
  • Did I pack the charger to my phone or have fully charged spare battery?
  • Do I have emergency money available or access to emergency funds?
  • Is there an emergency set of clothes and shoes for each member of my party? These clothes should be comfortable but covering and the shoes sturdy and comfortable in case you have to walk any distance.
  • Do I have an emergency supply of medications that my family takes on a daily basis?
  • Is there a spare tire that is in good repair and properly aired up in the trunk?
  • Do I have plenty of emergency water for me, my passengers and the car?
  • Do I have emergency food like protein bars, shelf stable meals or MRE’s that are easy to prepare and eat?
  • Do you have road cones and flares where you can get them?
  • Do I have a fully charged fire extinguisher handy?

Being prepared goes beyond what you carry with you. It also includes the preventative measures to insure all needs are met on the trip. You should also consider taking a look at your insurance as well.

  • Do I have enough car insurance?
  • Is my health insurance up to date?
  • Is my business insurance what I need?
  • Do I have home insurance that will cover me while I am away?
